Program Objectives
- To be aware of the purposes and essential characteristics of educational
assessments
- To understand the different types of assessments used in elementary
and secondary education
- To be able to plan and construct assessments of different types and
response formats
- To effectively utilize teacher-made tests in the classroom
- To understand the different types of scores used to describe the results
of assessments
- To be aware of the precautions to be taken in interpreting assessment
results
- To be able to use assessment results to improve instruction and to
provide feedback to students, parents, and the public

- To understand the issues and ethics surrounding test preparation practices

Program Activities
- Identify the existence and use of achievement assessment information
at your school
- Examine case studies involving the use of assessment information to
make classroom and school level decisions
- Develop an instructional improvement plan based on assessment data
- Complete the components of a plan which would result in a comprehensive,
teacher-constructed test
- Plan an alternative assessment which could be used to assess specific
learning outcomes and academic standards
- Critique the ethics of the test preparation practices presented in
two case studies
