Guide to Reading and Language Skills

Program Content

This workshop helps teachers to use children's literature books to teach and reinforce basic reading and language arts skills. The handbook, Teacher's Guide to Reading and Language Skills by Donna M. Miller, evaluates over five hundred children's books and poems according to usability as an instructional tool. Children's books are matched with the basic skills and objectives needed for success in reading. Many of the books listed are accompanied by a brief example of how the skills can be taught using that specific work.

Participants will leave the workshop with five fully developed lesson plans for teaching these basic skills in a poem and five lesson plans for teaching these skills in a book.

This workshop makes teachers more aware of basic reading skills and shows how teachers can use not only the books listed, but any good children's literature as a vehicle to teach reading and language skills.
