Literature Activities for Reluctant Readers

Program Content

This workshop trains educators how to work with early readers with a variety of experiences to enhance their interest in reading. Literature Activities for Reluctant Readers by John and Patty Carratello, is used to show how books and activities can be introduced to spark curiosity and imaginative thinking. Since many primary aged children have limited literature based experiences, this workshop explores methods to help children grow to love books. The connection of books to other curricular areas and to the child's whole learning experience will also be addressed.

Program Objectives

  • To assist teachers in locating good books and poems which will aid in reading enjoyment
  • To assist teachers in using a variety of methods to present books and poems
  • To encourage teachers to use cooperative learning strategies to engage their students
  • To remind teachers that reading is indeed FUNdamental and that having fun with a book does not exclude learning from that book
